The third pilgrimage festival took place in the autumn during the seventh month of the Jewish year (Lev. 23:33–44). This is called Tabernacles (Heb. Sukkoth). The term refers to a rough shelter (Heb. sukkah) made out of branches, and it recalled the harvesting of tree and vine (figs, pomegranates, grapes, or olives). Such crops were so valuable that farmers would often stay in their fields to protect them. Even today, such harvest shelters can be seen throughout the Arab countryside in Palestine
